$2,000 Grant Awarded to Berkshire South from Guardian Life for Teen Wellness Program

The Guardian Life Insurance Company of America has awarded a $2,000 grant to Berkshire South Regional Community Center supporting the Teen Outreach Nutrition Exercise (TONE) program. TONE is one of twelve programs in the Community Center’s Youth Intervention/Prevention Curriculum (YIPC) which is designed to reduce risky behaviors among middle and high school youth enabling students to achieve their physical, mental, and social goals. TONE is a critical component of the Center’s ongoing efforts to help youth build lifelong healthy habits.

The Community Center’s free TONE program systematically improves the health and well-being of teens in grades 9-12 through a three-tiered progressively challenging regime of exercise and personal wellness.  Participants attend exercise classes, nutrition and cooking demonstrations, and workshops on subjects including pairing health with lifestyle, leadership and mentoring, and the value of education. They also complete community service projects such as helping with Community Suppers, trail clearing, or Center improvements.  The layered structure of the program enables teens to gradually adapt to healthier habits, incorporating them into their lifestyle over time.

The TONE program is free and operates year round accepting applications on a continuous basis. Students interested in joining TONE should pick up a packet at the front desk or in the fitness office. For more information, contact the program coordinator at or call the fitness office at 413.528.2810 ext. 35.

Berkshire South’s mission is to build a sense of community and common purpose throughout the region, and to enhance the recreational, educational, cultural, health and social well-being of the residents of the Southern Berkshires. Berkshire South Regional Community Center is a non-sectarian, non-profit organization open to all, regardless of ability to pay.
