Earlier this year, the US Surgeon General issued an advisory highlighting the prevalence of loneliness in our country as a pressing public health issue that has impacted approximately one in two American adults:
Loneliness is far more than just a bad feeling—it harms both individual and societal health. It is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death. The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and even greater than that associated with obesity and physical inactivity. And the harmful consequences of a society that lacks social connection can be felt in our schools, workplaces, and civic organizations, where performance, productivity, and engagement are diminished (from the introduction to the Surgeon General’s advisory, Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation).
Thankfully, because of your support, an antidote for loneliness is right here in your backyard.
In 1996, a group of southern Berkshire county community members came together to discuss the need for a space to bring people together to tackle the issue of isolation. They recognized that there was a lack of access for most people to the few recreational, educational, cultural, health and social organizations there were in south county at the time, and they sought to improve the social well-being of the people in our region. The result is that in 2002 Berkshire South opened its doors to the public and for the last 21 years, we have been connecting people to one another through health and wellness programs, arts classes, children’s enrichment opportunities, and special events.
The Surgeon General’s report makes several recommendations to government agencies, community groups, and individuals as to how best to address the epidemic of loneliness. Included in the advisory are the following recommendations for individuals:
- Participate in social and community groups such as fitness, religious, hobby, professional, and community service organizations to foster a sense of belonging, meaning, and purpose
- Actively engage with people of different backgrounds and experiences to expand your understanding of and relationships with others
What all of this says to me is that our community needs us now more than ever! Your gift to Berkshire South is an investment in a local institution that exists to bring together people of different backgrounds and experiences, regardless of their ability to pay, and to foster within them a sense of community and common purpose. What better way to contribute to the well-being of our community?! As a nonprofit, Berkshire South must raise $1.7 million annually to keep its doors open. Please give what you can to Berkshire South’s annual campaign this year-end. Together, we can make a difference in the health of our community and every one of us will benefit as a result.
