Meet Catherine, Our 2026 Splash-A-Thon Ambassador!

Catherine Blake is Berkshire South's Adaptive Swim Instructor, providing swim lessons for children and adults with adaptive needs.

Listen to an interview with our 2026 Splash-A-Thon Ambassador, Catherine, and Berkshire South Events & Rentals Manager, Susie Kandt, on WSBS!

1. How does this event impact your swimmers’ experiences and opportunities?

It means we’re able to offer fully funded weekly lessons four days per week. Currently I teach between 5 adults and 12 kids. When I started at Berkshire South, we only had four participants. Now we have a waiting list. I can’t imagine not having funds to continue expanding to meet the needs of our communities.

2. What does having access to adaptive swim lessons mean for participants and families?

They support each other and build each other up. They laugh and look forward to seeing each other every week. After so many years, we are like family. The families socialize and network with each other during the lessons.

3. What would you like the community to understand about adaptive swimming?

For so many of the Adaptive community, safety around water is a huge issue. Coming to lessons and learning about safety both in and around the pool is incredibly important. Being able to teach them how to swim is a necessity even if it takes years to do.

How It Works

Anyone who would like to participate in the Splash-A-Thon is welcome! In order to ensure that people of ALL abilities are able to join us, we are offering two Special Edition Splash-A-Thon Aqua Classes in addition to lap swimming. There are two ways to participate, choose the option that works best for you and your specific needs.

OPTION 1: LAP SWIMMER (for all ages)

Swimmers of all abilities are welcome to swim laps individually or as part of a relay team. Relay teams and individuals have up to two hours to swim up to 200 lengths of the pool. You do NOT have to use the full time or swim 200 lengths! Relay teams generally include up to four people, though exceptions can be made for larger teams. Team members may swim individually or share a lane.

OPTION 2: SPLASH-A-THON SWIM CLASS

Choose from two celebratory, adaptive swim experiences designed to be welcoming, inclusive, and supportive of a wide range of abilities. Instructors Janice Shields and Catherine Blake will create a fun, low-pressure environment where every swimmer can participate in a way that feels right for them. Registration includes one swimmer plus up to two caretakers or family members at no additional cost.

Aqua Thrills CLASS (for adults ages 18+)

10:00-11:00 am

Swim Jam CLASS (for children ages 0-17)
